GENERAL NEWS.
A Mercantile Union, similar to that .recently started at Hawera, is being formed at Waitara. The Tui will in future trade regularly between Wellington and Waitara. Mr Christian Theodore Nelson, one of the oldest settlers at Waitara, died suddenly at his residence on Sunday morning. He retired to bed in his usual health on Saturday night, and woke about midnight, being seized with a sudden and painful illness, and expired shortly afterwards, Mr Mehaffey, of the Stratford Hotel, celebrated the opening of his new house on Thursday by a banquet, to which a numerous company had been invited. The hotel is a very commodious one, and quite an ornament to the township. The Wesle3 r an congregation met at Hawera on Monday evening, the Rev. J. A, Luxford presiding. The object of the meeting was ta take steps to hold a tea mealing and entertainment on the Queen’s Birthday, and thus make a thorough day for the foundation stone laying business. Committees were appointed to manage the entertainment and to carry out any arrangements the Masons desire in connection with the ceremony of laying the church foundation stone.
