MELANCHOLY DROWNING CASE. Information was received at Waitara on Monday that a young man named Matthew Clough, aged about 20, was drowned at 10 a.m., while crossing the Manganui River in a canoe. There being a fresh in the river, Clough found considerable difficulty in managing the canoe, and, in spite of his efforts, he found it was drifting towards one of the falls or rapids, when he jumped into the river, but, failing to reach the bank, was drowned. His brother was standing on the bank at the time, and saw the accident, but was powerless to render any assistance. Before sinking Clough called out, “ Oh, Jack ! oh, Jack !” and then disappeared. Clough belonged to the survey party , and Lis friends reside near Sentry Hill.
