Less demand was experienced, and prices were occasionally, easier excepting for Port Philip and Sydney,‘good greasy and good combing wools generally. For these descriptions prices are firm, ' The markets for Colonial breadstuff's and tallow are weak, but quotations are without change. (Received March 9, 1 p.m.) March 7. At the wool 1 sale to-day, 119,500 bales were catalogued. There was good demand for fine wools, but inferior and medium qualities -were, neglected. (Received -March 9, 2 p.m.) V _ ; , March 8. The'cargo l 6f frozen mutton ex sleamship Sorrento from Port Chalmers has now all been disposed of at an average of 6|d per pound. • ; PARIS, March 8. Intelligence is to hand from Antananarivo that a French gunboat has arrived at Lamatirie, the chief port of Madagascar, and that four other war vessels have gone to ports on the npnhwest coast which are. claimed by the French. The Madagasees are very much excited at this step on the part of France, and are preparing for war. Byrne, is-still detained in custody pending' the' arrival of‘a fresh warrant charging -him- with complicity in the murder of Feild, the juryman, and in an attempt on the life of Judge Lawson. BOMBAY, March 8. “ Major ” Tucker, of the Salvation Army, who was.arrested here last month while parading the streets, has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, and four of his colleagues have been fined. .'V AUSTRALIAN. The body of a man named Robert Harding recently found in the water at Brighton with a wound in his throat, has beemexhumed; as there are grave suspicions that deceased met' his death through foul play. Later, It is now believed that Harding committed suicide, and died by drowning after culling his throat.
