CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—My attention has been Brawn to a letter in j r our issue of Friday, signed “Reform.” I have no doubt but you will, with your usual courlesj', grant me, as onesihterested : in ithet cause of education”, space .for a few-remarks. .. I do 5 not wish; to ■ enter , into' a -with” “ Reform ” oi't the already much debated question of corporal punishment ip schools, nor do I wish "to. champion the teacher referred toi . That gentleman, I feel assured, can clear himself from your cor-
respondent’s insinuation. Reform ’ l (who .. —from the tone of his communication, approves not of the present system of education that sanctions punishment) has made, I think, an ungenerous use of your journal ; for, under cover of a nom de plume—the cowardly protection of an anonymous signature—he has made an unmanly attack, based on an ex parte statement, on one who, by reason of bis position, is debarred the privilege of reply. Does “ Reform ” feel that he has got 'a Grievance ? Does he believe that his children have been treated harshly ? If so, why does he not briny forward a charge and have it enquired into by the education authorities ?—I am, &c., A.JB.C. January 20.
