MELBOURNE, Dec. 18. Lord Charles Scott is ' expected to arrive in Melbourne early in January, to marry a lady resident in Victoria. Since the Hawthorne accident the omnibusses have been crowded, and road traffic very much increased. A very strong feeling prevails in Melbourne in reference to the removal of the control of railways from the present political head. At a meeting held at the Town Hall, attending by leading citizens, and convened by the mayor in answer to a requisition, a resolution affirming the necessity of a complete overhaul of the department was carried nen t. con. A curious case of mistaken identity has occurred in Melbourne. A man named Gordon is in gaol on a charge of bigamy, on the evidence of a number of witnesses, who are certain-that the man’s name is Gordon. A number, on the other hand, are equally certain that hit name is Simpson. The Government has been interviewed on the subject, and full enquiry will be made. A board has been appointed to report re claims arising out of the Hawthorne railway accident, and persons claiming compensation have the option of submitting their claims to the board or of the department in the usual course of law. Another suspicious death has occurred. Mrs Margaret Robertson, a nurse, has been committed for manslaughter on a charge of malpractice. Captain Mason, J.P., manager, of the Belfast Branch Savings Bank, has been arrested on a charge of embezzlement. He has’been twice mayor of Belfast. A case of some interest in the theatrical world has been tried in the Divorce Court. Mrs Pringle, wife, sues fora dissolution of marriage on account of defendant’s an opera singer, whose stage name isp Templeton, intimacy with Miss Lambert, a well-known contralto singer. The dissolution has been granted.
