SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT.
- ♦ The entertainment on Wednesday evening in aid of the School prize fund was well attended. Proceedings opened with an overture by the Band, which at times was rather discordant owing to the vagaries of one of the gentlemen with a cornet. A chorus by the children followed, and then Mr Dixon gave a couple of comic songs in good style. Mrs Haywood was encored for her song, indeed throughout the evening the audience were persistent in their demands for a repetition of each item. Miss Hurst, Miss Black, Miss Gowland, and Messrs Hamerton, Kendall, and Rose contributed songs and were loudly applauded. Recitations were given by Miss Aitcheson and Miss Davis and another selection by the band, better played than the first, and a cornet duet by Messrs Haywood and Nutsford made up the musical portion of the programme. Several scenes were acted by some of the scholars and were perhaps more enjoyable than anything else. The_ tallest young gentleman spoke his lines in excellent style, while the other dean unmistakeable appreciation humourous. A piano duet by Harden and Hawken was reft pmnW.d. hut Mr Aitcheson came forward and children had a little presentation tinSfe to Mr Flood. That gentleman had intended leaving the district, and the children meant to give him a present when be went. He had now changed his mind, but the children resolved to carry ont their idea all the same. A little boy and girl then advanced and read a complimentary address to Mr Flood, and handed him a handsome gold locket on behalf of the scholars, vyhich the recipient acknowledged in suitable words. The entertainment was brought to a close with the National Anthem. We have been requested by the Chairman of the Committee to state that the Band freely gave their services without any charge whatever for which he desires to thank them publicly. The amount taken at the doors and for sale of tickets was £ls 17s which after expenses were paid left a balance of £lO 2s.
