THE COMET.
“ Observer ” writing to a Wellington journal on 26th Oct. says: The comet has greatly changed since I last wrote, on Saturday, and so gives evidence of the ■•■' intense heat to which it has been subjected as it passed round the sun. The nucleus is about ten times the apparent size it presented when seen on Tuesday last ; it is not so bright as on Saturday, but it is far brighter than the moon would be when rising at the comet’s place at the full. The tail is one-third longer than it was on Saturday, The brightness 6f the eastern side still exceeds that of the other ; the black streak is not central to the axis pf the tail-cone. The fail is now far brighter than any other comet’s tail that I have seen. Our last large comet was noted for the whiteness of (he tail, this comets tail and nucleus are both yellowish. The tail now is curved slightly towards -'the north. I Was very fortunate,: as just after I had finished observing clouds come on.- I should have been very sorry indeed to'have-missed what I saw this morning. v r-s- ; -
