RAILWAY RETURNS.

Returns of the railway traffic during the first 20 weeks of the current financial year show a falling-off of £IO,OOO in the net profits yielded by the New Zealand railways in that period over and above working expenses. The gross receipts are £864,728 for 1344 miles open, as against £348,060 for 1303 miles open during the same period of last year. The working expenses, however, have increased by over £30,000 for the 20 weeks, and absorb 62 per cent, of the receipts instead of 37 per cent, as last year.
