STEAMER IN PERIL.

Messrs Lamport and Holt’s Liverpool mail steamer Pascal, from Buenos Ayres, on stay during a heavy gale, and when off Ushant, broke her crankshaft and was rendered helpless. Towards evening the Cardiff steamship Gabelvar, from Bilbao to Cardiff, bore down. A hawser was.hauled but. It snapped, and when the Pascal’s boat was being hoisted from the davits the ropes parted, and the boat and five men were precipated into the sea. Happily, but not without difficulty, each man was rescued, ropes and life-hoys being thrown them. On Sunday the Gabelva, in running alongside, collided with the Pascal. Owing to the heavy sea further attempt was : relinquished, and the Pascal helplessly: drifted, dangerously approaching the French coast. The De Bas Lighthouse light was distinguished at 4 o’clock on Monday morning, distant several miles only. All hope of escape was abandoned as the Gabelva’s lights were seen. Flares were sent up, and meantime Captain Taylor ordered preparations to be made for taking to the boats, saying the passengers would have to be lowered over the yardarm. The passengers gave themselves and the ship np for lost. The Gabelva, noticing the light, bore down,-and sent a rope attached to a buoy. It drifted under the Pascal, and was caught by the carpenter courageously lowering himself overboard. Towing then commenced, both vessels reaching Plymouth.
