Retiring Councillors.
Muxicitad affairs will bo lively in Patea during the next fortnight. Three Councillors retire (as lowest on the poll), and the nominations to these vacancies arc likely to be more than three. Messrs Gibson, Howitt, and \. Black are expected to offer again, and it is certain that others will be nominated. It is not improbable that one or two other Councillors may retire voluntarily, on the plea of inconvenience to business. There may. be five, perhaps six, vacancies to fill; so that ratepayers may have to elect one half the Council. The work to be done in the coming year is more important that that done already. The mode of using the ordinary revenue becomes additionally important, because the income from rents being required to pay interest on the loan, there will be less to spend out of ordinary revenue, and it should be applied to works that are really most beneficial. There will be much requiring to be done, and little to do it with. The loan expenditure is for special works, but they leave a great deal to be done out of ordinary revenue. There are also projects of great importance to the town, and these will need to be wisely dealt with. The election of Mayor takes place on the last Wednesday in November.
