COMING LAND SALE.
A good many strangers are being attracted by the approaching land sale to be held on the Bth. The general opinion is that the land will go high, as, apart from strangers, a great many settlers are anxious to secure sections, and as this will be the last sale of open land on the coast, future opportunities will be lost. The natives very sore with the manner in which the Government are locking up their lands. They argue that it is useless to say that they are given so much land when they are prohibited from dealing with it, that they are losing some thousands a year so long as the Government hang up their reserves in the present manner. The natives are anxious to lease, but they would prefer choosing their own tenants. The Government need not be so paternal about the poor ignorant savage. I’ll back that same savage to make as . keen a bargain as the sharpest Hebrew on record. Again, with reference to present holders of leases from natives, it is very unsatisfactory for them, as the commission have in a great many instances altered the names in the several hapus, and consequently new leases will have to be made out. Should Mr B rycc’s Bill pass it is hoped that Mr Mackay will at once take into hand the reserves around here and settle the present lessees’ titles.—Cor. Chronicle,
