The Mormons propose to make a combined effort to defeat the operations of the Bill to suppress polygamy. There is great trouble with Russian Jew refugees in New York, as the men are stubborn and refuse to assist themselves. Anna Parnell has been seized with brain fever, consequent on grief for the loss of her sister Fanny. Meeting, who sold plans of the coast defence of Germany to Russia, has been sentenced fo six years’ imprisonment with hard labor.
A desperate but unsuccessful attempt was made on July 28th to assassinate the Recorder of Dublin at Green-street Courthouse by a tailor named Fitzpatrick, nonsuited as plaintif on a civil bill. The Recorder was fired at in the open court. John Bright recently received twentyfive American drygoods clerks at his residence, and the Lord Mayor afterwards entertained the party at lunch. A slight fenian scare was felt at Windsor Castle on.the 22nd July, when all the keys from the most important locks were found missing. Over 400 new locks for the entire building were immediately ordered.
The weather threatens the utter destruction of what promised to .bo the finest harvest ever reaped in Ireland. C, Mulhers, one of the largest iron and steel merchants'in Middlesborough, has failed for £150,000. France is putting her navy on a war footing.
Nine thousand copies of a revolutionary proclamation signed by Nicholas Constantovich, cousin of the Emperor of Russia, were discovered at St. Petersburg.
ARABFS LETTER TO GLADSTONEArab! Pasha wrote the following letter to Gladstone a few days before the bombardment of Alexandria, but Mr Gladstone did not receive it until Admiral Seymour had done the work :—“ ‘ The Koran ’ commands us to resist if war is waged against us. Hence England may be assured that the first gun she fires against Egypt will absolve Egyptians from all treaties, their control will cease, and the property of all Europeans will be confiscated, canals destroyed, and a jehad (holy war) will be proclaimed in Syria, Arabia, and India. The first blow with which the English strike Egypt will cause blood to flow through all Asia and Africa ; responsibility for which will be on the head of England. Egypt is still the fast friend of England, and keeps her road open to India ; but she must keep within the limits of her jurisdiction ; and finally England may rest assured that we are determined to die for our country.
