HAWERA.

(from our correspondent. At the R.M. Court on Thursday' several persons were summoned by the Town Clerk and police for breaches of the bye. laws, and were fined 5s and costs. The Racing Club held a meeting last week and decided to lease Mr Fantham’s course for 99 years, Mr Fantham to get one-third of the gate money realised on race days and 10 per cent, of gate money on show or sports day's. It is with regret that I learn our Mayor is about to leave us. He has been unsettled for some time, and has now finally decided to live in Auckland. Mr McGuire will leave about the cud of the year.

The Borough Council have decided to call for tenders for supplying the plant for and sinking an artesian well. Many persons say it will bo a failure, but as it has never been tried before I think it rather premature to give an opinion. The Drill Shed is nearly finished and is expected to be ready for use in two or three weeks. Mysterious whispers are going abroad about a dance in connexion with the opening, but how far that is true I can’t say. Two deaths occurred here last week. Miss James who has been at Owen’s Hotel for some few months, and who had made herself universally popular, succumbed to an attack of rheumatic fever on Weunes-

day last. The funeral took place on Friday. The other death occurred on Thursday ; a child of Mr I. D. Watts, aged throe years, was only taken ill on Tuesday. Tho cause of death is reported to be dipthoria, but there seems some doubt about it. I hope it is not, as that disease does not generally end with one victim. BOROUGH COUNCIL AFFAIRS. At the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday Councillor King moved that the resolution for stopping the gravelling bo rescinded, and the road from Cook’s corner to Railway Station bo repaired as soon as tho Council think advisable.

Councillors Partridge, Bate, and Riddiford opposed it very strongly, the former saying that it was a most childish thing to do to propose a resolution at one meeting and try and rescind it at tho next ; in any case all the arguments by Councillors King and Pritchard had failed so far to prove to him that it was any use going on with it : it would only make tho streets more impassable than they are at present.

After some discussion the resolution was carried. Division: Ayes : Councillors King, Pritchard, Symes, and Thomson. Noes ; Councillors Partridge, Bate, Riddiford, and Hobbs. Councillor Thomson who was in the chair gave his casting vote for tho resolution.
