At present, owing to Constable Burrow’s illness, and his consequent release.from duty, we are in a very unprotected state, having no local conservator of the peace. The consequence is that the township is almost every evening the scene of drunkenness and rowdyism. This may be very pleasant for the individuals who indulge in this sort of amusement, but the residents of the town being of rather a peaceable disposition, do not fully appreciate it. The human voice is considered one of the sweetest of sounds when properly modulated, but when used for the purpose of gmng vent to yelling, hooting, and language not fit for the human ear to listen to, it is anything but sweet. Surely the authorities can spare “ even one ” constable for our district. The quadrille assemblies and the rink are now in fall swing. ' The usual fortnightly gathering of the former was held on Friday last. There was a much better muster than the one before; though no doubt that being so soon after the ball, a good many did not consequently attend. These little gatherings are very popular. The Rinking Club having imported a new lot of rinks from Dunedin, are just getting into working order, opening the hall on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Several new members have joined the club.
