[Letter delayed by mail being carried on to Waverloy by mistake.] The Borough Council held a meeting on Monday evening. W. Prosser applied to have the Pound removed to Block 4. Granted.
Mrs Harkness complained of a nuisance on her property coming from the Brewerv.
The County Council asked the Borough to waive their right to the gravel coming by railway for a time to give them an opportunity of metalling the Hawerk and Normanby road. The Mayor proposed that it should be left to the Engineer.. Councillor King proposed an amendment that : the Council should have half the gravel, but it was lost on division and the resolution carried.
Resolved, that the captain of the Fire Brigade make out specifications of the articles he will require, and tenders be called for same. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with the insurance companies with reference to the support they would give toward getting a fire engine.
Accounts to the amount of £250 were passed for payment. The meetings of the Council are to be held fortnightly for the future.
Resolved that a snra of £45 be voted for purchasing a safe. '■ Two or three Councillors opposed it as a wasteful expenditure, and proposed an amendment, which was negatived. Councillor Symes proposed, “ That a committee be appointed to look into a water scheme for the suppression of fire.” Resolution was seconded by Councillor Prichard and carried.
; A good number assembled at the Star office yesterday, at the invitation of the proprietors, to see the new machine working off the enlarged edition. Champagne was produced, and success to the proprietors was drank, after a few remarks made by the Mayor. The entertainment on Thursday in aid of the Wesleyan Church passed off very well, there being a good number present. ■
In the R.M. Court on Thursday, Mrs Cook was charged by J. Gildroy for wilholding some money (£2O) which he alleged he gave her to keep for him. Mr Matthews for plaintiff, and Mr Hamerton for defendant. There was really no case, the defendant had given his money back when he was intoxicated, and somebody had evidently eased him of it. The case was dismissed, the R.M.’(Captain Wray) saying that he was quite satisfied that the money was returned to plaintiff.
