Fire at Wanganui.
Reports from Wanganui, state that, at about 12 o’clock on Sunday night, the premises of Messrs Wakefield and Hogg, chemists, were discovered to be on fire. Mr Hogg was himself first to discover the fire, being aroused by the noise of breaking bottles, and the bedroom full of smoke. He at once found bis way downstairs, and then saw the whole shop in a blaze. Neighbors assisted promptly, and the fire alarm soon brought out the fire brigade. It was at once evident, when even the small hose had begun to play, that, fierce as was the flame and strong as was the hold which it had obtained over the whole inside of the shop, the fire had no chance against the force of water brought to bear. Although the flames were confined to the shop, the damage done is very considerable, the greater portion of Mr Hogg’s valuable stock of drugs and chemicals being either entirely.destroyed by the fire, or the flood of water used to extinguish it. Fortunately, the' stock was insured, but the amount of insurance cannot possibly cover the damage which must result to Mr Hogg’s business.
