Seat of Government.
One reason for proposing to remove the seat of Government to Christchurch is rather novel. In case of a hostile attack on these islands an enemy could destroy seize the* centre of Government, and paralyse the country, for there being only one line of
by' which ' our land-defenders could be brought up, that line could be destroyed. Tho conditions at Christchurch'are urged thus: The city could not be destroyed by bombardment from the sea ; and the various lines of railway cohVergiiig Eo it Would prevent an enemy blocking the lines of quick communication. As to the cost of
removal, , the , estimates range from £ 150,000,,f0 ; £BOO,OOO. The removal would be'argreat collapse for Wellington, and an immense lift for Christchurch.
The.votings strength on this question is nearly 1 equal, 1 • and very little would change the balance. A strong effort is to he>made/this session by South Island members to change onr political centre of gravity.
