Land Tax
Mr Turnbull gave notice of a resolution in favor of a progressive land tax on properties over 500 acres.
Rabbit Nuisance
Arrangements have been made for introducing a consignment of polecats from Tasmania, also periodical supplies of ferrets from England, to cope with the rabbit nuisance. New BillsBills introduced to amend “The Fencing Act, 1881.” (Mr Smith). To afford Relief under Certain Circumstances to De-fered-payment Settlers. Paying for Long Speeches. Mr Pyke’s motion requiring members to pay the cost of printing their speeches, was debated at length, and rejected.
Faggot Votes.
Sir G. Grey’s bill to prevent the circulation of faggot votes by landowners was debated last night. After the usual adjournment last night, the debate‘on purchase of votes Bill was continued by Capt, McKenzie, who opposed it, as also did Mr Fish, Col. Trimble, and others.
Mr Green, Mr Holmes, Mr Seddon, and others supported the Bill. Sir George Grey then replied, and after further speeches from Mr Swanson regarding certain remarks made by Sir G. Grey and others, the House divided, and the Bill was thrown out by 37 to 19. The House rose at 2.25.
