WAVERLEY.
(prom our correspondent.)
In reference to the public meeting held re alteration of Railway Siding from Whenuakura to the Racecourse, the following letter has been received by the chairman of the meeting from the Public Works office :
“ Sir, —With reference to your letter of 10th April, I am now directed by the Minister for Public Works to inform you that, having enquired into the matter, he finds that to substitute a station on the Waverley Racecourse in place of the proposed Whenuakura Station would entail a large increase of expenditure, and occasion some public inconvenience ; and the Minister is therefore unable to accede to the prayer of the memorial enclosed in your letter, and to the accompanying resolution. Will you be good enough to inform the meraoralists accordingly.— John Knowles, Under Secretary for Public Works.” The formation of the main street and footpaths through the township is progressing satisfactorily so far, thanks to the fine weather. Some inconvenience will however be caused to some of the householders, owing to the levels of the footpaths leaving them rather elevated. The Commercial Hotel fares the worst in this respect, it being built on very high ground. It is to be hoped no time will be lost in metalling after the formation is complete, as otherwise it will be lost time and money wasted. One of our oldest residents has just left us for “fresh fields and pastures new,” Mr J. W. Kenah, J.P. I understand he intends settling near Feilding, having bought a place near that town.
