Hawera Borough Council.
(from our correspondent.)
The Borough Council had a special and ordinary meeting on Monday night. At the special meeting a resolution making the bye-laws was confirmed. The ordinary meeting was then held. Resolved that a rate of Is in the pound be levied on all rateable property for the year 1882-83 ; also that the ordinary meetings of the Council be held on the second Wednesday in the month. The following recommendations from Committee were agreed to :
That Mr Nathan’s tender for Union-sfc, be declined.
That Messrs Farrington and Barton be the solicitors to the Council.
Cricket has not quite died out yet, a match being arranged for Saturday next between the Manutahi C.O, and Hawera second eleven.
Building is still being carried on here to a large extent. Messrs Pulford and Kirk’s new hotels if not quite are nearly completed. The Bank of Australasia and two cottages for Mr W. Wright are also nearty finished. Mr F. R. Jackson’s new offices are just commenced, and several smaller places are in course of construction.
Tenders for the Borough Chambers will also be called shortly, and I believe it is tlie intention of Mr W. M. Thomson to put up two handsome shops on the Town Hall corner as soon as he can get the plans out.
Tenders for earthwork and formation have been let for several streets in the town, and also for carting gravel from the station, so that I think we should be able to congratulate ourselves on passable streets and footpaths during the winter months.
PROPOSED OAS SUPPLY. It has been thought desirable by a few of our leading townspeople to enquire whether it would be possible to work a gas company in Hawera, and information with respect to it has been obtained, and will be laid before a meeting to-morrow. There can be no possible doubt as to the advantages of gas over kerosine for lighting purposes, and can also be utilised in many other ways, for instance in stores, and for cooking and warming purposes. Taking the reports of gas companies in New Zealand, it would appear that it is a safe and payable investment, and I hope to see the tradesmen and public generally of Hawera come forward as investors as well as burners, so that the benefit may be reaped by them both ways. The report which will be laid before the meeting cannot, I think, be anything but satisfactory, as the writers are prepared to take up shares to the amount of about onethird of the capital of the company, if formed.
Hawera, Friday.—The meeting re gas company was held yesterday at Messrs Nolan & Co.’s store ; his Worship the Mayor in the chair. It was resolved that Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn be elected provisional secretary, and a committee was formed to canvass the town to see what support they would get from the tradespeople, &c., as consumers. Another meeting will be held in a few days, when the committee’s report will be ventilated. The promoters present were very sanguine as to the result, and I hope shortly to inform you that the company has been formed.
