DRINK AND THE NATIVES.

The Rev. W, Gittos, Wesleyan missionary of Kaipara, at an interview with the Hon. Mr Bryce relative to native matters in Kaipara, expressed personal gratification at finding the Government were enforcing the prohibition of intoxicating drink to the natives under the Native Outlying Districts Act, He referred to the demoralising scenes of debauchery he had witnessed among the natives of the Lake country during his visit there, and which was solely owing to the liquor traffic, Mr Bryce assured the Rev. Mr Gittos that the Government was fully determined to enforce the law relative to the prohibition of spirits to the natives, in order to save the Maoris from themselves, as well as to prevent their being improved off the face of the earth by unprincipled Europeans, who were reckless of consequences provided their greed of gain was satisfied.
