AFRICAN MISSIONARY IN N.Z.

An Auckland journal reports that Mr Gow Jukufifar, a Wesleyan African missionary, has been lecturing on “ Missions in South and Central Africa.” Mr Gow Jukufifar, who speaks English with ease and fluency, gave a graphic description of African mission work, the social condition of the people, and the obstacles which existed there to the spread of Christianity. He has also a sly touch of humour about him, and gave an amusing sketch of a gigantic heathen chief whom he endeavoured to reclaim. The heathen resented his overtures, so as a last resource on leaving he prayed with him, but did so with bis eyes open in case the old sinner attempted to do him violence, for, as Mr Jukufifar quaintly remarked, “ It was just one of those cases in which the Scriptural maxim 1 Watch and pray ’ came in handy.”
