TAURANGA TO ROTORUA.

During Mr Rolleston’s late visit to Tauranga the settlers interviewed him on the subject of the contemplated line of railway or tramroad between Tauranga and Rotorua. Mr Stewart asked that the required land for its formation should be handed over to a company that would, in addition to the line, form a settlement of 2000 people on a combined plan. They asked no money of Government, only the land on condition that they should construct a railway and found a settlement. He said that such a line would be of the greatest importance to Rotorua as to Tauranga. There would be a branch of the line to Opotiki. The narrow gauge would be preferred, as cheaper and more suited to the country. The hon. gentleman (says the N.Z. Herald) expressed the highest approval of the plan, and promised it the most favourable consideration when formal application was made to him on the subject.
