COST of NARROW-GAUGE LINES.
The following information as to cost of a narrow-gauge railway may be of service. During the Royal Agricultural show at Derby, Mr Hayward invited a number of agriculturists to inspect his narrowguage railway at Duffield Bank, The following estimate gives the cost per yard of a line about 15in. guage, to carry one ton per axle, allowing an ample margin for emergencies : s. d. Earthwork, two cube yards per run 2 0 Bridges and other structural works, say ... 1 0 Rails, 181b steel, including fishplates ... ... .•• 3 0 Sleepers, 7£in by 2£in by 3ft, 2ft apart ... 1 0 Ballast, 1 cube yard per 3 yards run 1 0 Laying, including points and spikes 1 0 Extras, say ... ... 10 Cost of 15in gauge service line per yard run 10 0 This would give the cost per mile at £BOO.
