Explosion of Threshing Machine.
SIX NATIVES INJURED.
Opunake, this day.—A horse threshing machine was being worked at Wiremu Kingi’s settlement yesterday, when the whole machine exploded or burst in a mysterious manner. It broke into small pieces, which flew about and struck the natives standing near. Two were injured seriously, and four others were wounded, while some had surprising escapes.
Native Suicide through Jealousy. Opunaki, this day.—A native hanged himself at Barihaka on Thursday, caused by jealousy respecting a waihena.
RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING. Brightwater.—The meeting has opened in beautiful weather. All the representatives are now on the ground; Major Baillie in command. The ranges are in good condition. Shooting commenced immediately after dinner. Nelson Rifles.
The first and second prizes in the Nelson match, being £lO and a cup value £lO and £9 respectively, have been struck out. All other prizes are reduced 25 per cent. With regard to the latter,.they will be re considered by the council, and probably the amount now deducted will be refunded when the Association is in funds.
