LIBEL ON THE MAYOR OF PATEA.
CRIMINAL PROSECUTION. Patea R.M. Court, This Day, before Mr 0. A. Wray, E.M.
The criminal prosecution for alleged libel on the Mayor of Patea, pnblished by Mr John Black, was resumed to-day, this being the fifth day of hearing. Mr Barton conducted the case for the prosecution, and Mr Hamerton for the defence. Evidence for the prosecution was continued. W. Cowern, auctioneer, deposed that his impression on reading the defamatory article was that the Mayor had imparted information which enabled the Mail to tender at a lower price than the Neivs. His conduct in doing so was subject to the gravest censure from all right-thinking men. Atjthat time he was under the impression that the Mayor had done it, but the subsequent action before this Court in trying to clear himself had induced the witness to think as well of Mr Sherwood as before. If he had not brought this action to clear himself, the witness would have thought less of him. The proprietor of the Mail gave evidence as to what actually passed between him and the Mayor respecting the tendering. The witness was cross-examined at length.
