NORMANBY.

(from our CORRESPONDENT.) Monday Morning. Though we have no voice in the election of a Mayor for the Borough of Hawera, we are specially interested in the result. Some time ago. a proposal —suggested by Hawera itself, and publicly accepted by Normanby—to incorporate the one with the other, and make one strong borough, was unfortunately afterwards negatived by our wary neighbors. They were influenced, upon second thoughts/ apparently by prudential considerations, and the danger likely to ensue from a conplication of interests. It was felt that there might be a difficulty in devising a policy that would satisfy both ends of the borough. The disruption of the projected coalition was most unlucky on many grounds, and particularly so for Normanby. The union would have strengthened her position, and she would have derived a special significance from the prestige of her more fortunate sister. But what is of still more consequence, a ' more robust -and genuine liberalism would; have displaced the obstrnctiveness which has been too powerful in the so-called management of Normanby. The more .wise and able counsellors of Hawera ■would have aided in its improvement and advancement, and; have wakened up the unwieldy; and slow leaders who claim to be bur fathers, and all that sort of nonsense—nice talk truly, considering our position and. the , state of our streets 1 Let us hope Normanby may yet be induced to wake up and , change this state of things.
