TARANAKI RE-VISITED.
■ A private letter has been shown us in which the writer, who left New Plymouth years ago and was educated in Europe, thus describes hisi impression in re-visiting the old place:—“ What a gorgeous country it is ! . The mountains awakens in me feelings of almost personal reverence and affection* I dp,not know whether Mr Bryce; is right in his speculations pn the connection between Mount Egmont and the inspiration of Maori prophetsprobably heishot, asthe Maoris do not seem:>to t . hold .the mountain in any way sacred; but I should expect it to have the effect of uniting together in one system all those .who live within sight of its The old volcano is in reality the Great Mother of the land around it (speaking geologically and sentinientally). When I was in New Plymouth 9 years ago I was unable to appreciate . it, but. now I see that it has sights not to be snrpasaed in the whole world.
