IMPORTANT TO ORCHARDISTS.
A very important discovery regarding the welfare of peach trees was recently announced by the curator of the garden of the Horticultural Society of Victoria. At Warrnambool a few years ago peach trees in one of the nurserys were in as bad a condition as anybody’s tref’s. diseased with black spot, and infested with aphides black and green, but arc now in the very best condition. According to the usual practice, the trees had been headed back ; this was done three years ago, and' at the same time the soil under and around the trees was covered with a layer of sand taken from the shore, near enough to the water to contain a considerable portion of sea salt, to which it may be supposed the beneficial effect is to be attributed. This sand was dug under the following winter, and another layer of sand applied, with the effect that the trees arc in the best possible condition—healthy, vigorous and fruitful. Therefore, they who reside near the sea, and grow, or desire to grow, peaches, may now obtain a panacea for maintaining them in a satisfactory condition.
