(PER. UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION,) LATEST ~HIS BAY, THE NATIVE DIFFICDLTY. MR SHEEHAN’S SPEECH Pungarebu. Canterbury and Malborongh Yols. marched to Opnuaki yesterday, and the Nelson men go to-day. All will embark in the Hinemoa. A further lot of Taranaki natives were arvested yesterday afternoon. Auckland. The Thames Volunteers returned here to-day, and were warmly welcomed. At a social gathering afterwards, Mr Sheehan in proposing the toast “ Success to the Thames Contingent,” expressed his entire approval of Mr Bryce’s policy and the way it was carried out. He spoke from his own knowledge of Native affairs throughout the colony, and he thought we had now seen the last of the native difficulty. Searching for Arms. New Plymouth, About twenty-five Taranaki Mounted Rifles in charge of Captain Davidson came in last night and left again at 7 o’clock this morning for the Waitara and northern Maori settlements. Their visit is for the purpose of searching every Native settlement between this town and the White Cliffs for fire-arms, and all they find will be impounded. The Natives throughout the district will be thoroughly disarmed. The Ngatiawa Natives who left Pungarebu yesterday were got about four miles south of Oakura last night. It was slow work getting the men to move. The women went first and the men followed. They are expected in town about two o’clock. It is proposed to have an address of thanks to the Volunteers drawn up and handsomely lithographed, and that each member who assisted in the demonstration be presented with a copy. Volunteer Appointments. Wellington. The following appointments are gazetted :—Oakura Rifles Volunteers, James Loverbridge to be Sub-Lieu-tenant ; Stratford Rangers Rifle Vole., James Hirst to be Sub-Lieutenant; New Plymouth Guards Rifle Vols, Fredrick Lewis Webster to be Captain, Thomas Kingswell Skinner to be SobLieutenant, John Murray Gibbs to be Hon. Assistant-Surgeon ; Egmont Rifle Vols., Lieutenant Wm. James Wells Smart to be Captain, Charles Barriball to be Lieutenant, Thos. Henry Hughes to be Sub-Lieutenant; Ngaire Rifle Vols., John Cunningham to be Lieutenant, Francis Bernard Seliwood Tresilian McCarthy to be Sub-Lieu-tenant. KEREOPA CAPTURED. MORE PRISONERS. Pungarebu, The Association special says : Nelson men marched for Opuuaki at 8 this morning. A number of Ngatiaruanuis were sent heme under escort. Kereopa, of Waitotara, for whom search bad been made for some time, was captured near here this morning and sent to Farihaka Camp. Nine men and one woman were taken prisoners at Parapara fences last night Steamer Ashore. IN THE FRENCH PASS. Wellington, This Day. The s.s. Penguin is ashore at the French Pass, in Cook’s Strait. The s.s. Wallace is standing by. The Penguin’s position is not considered dangerous at present. Nelson. The Hawea arrived at the French Pass at 2 this morning, and found the Penguin jammed in one of the swashways on the breaks in reef. She lay about two lengths from the Beacon at Pass Point. At her bows are 17 feet of water, and aft 18 feet at low water. She is straight through the reef, and is fixed by rocks on both sides, about abreast of the mainmast. The tide runs both ebb and flow straight with her. Part of her propeller was three feet high at high water. She has laid one tide and has not strained. At 5-40 when Hawea left she had made no water. The Wallace is still alongside. She is expected to get off at next tide. The Penguin is one of the well known boats of the Union Co. Her gross tonnage is 749, with 900 horse power.
