WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Whenuahura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday. The election of members for the Waverley Riding of the Patea County Council took place on Wednesday (reported elsewhere). Mr Mason acted as returning officer at Waverley, and Mr Fookes at Waitotara. There was very little excitement throughout the election, and reckoning the number of electors on the roll, only a comparatively small proportion recorded their votes. Mr F. R. Jackson holds an extensive sale on Saturday next on account of Messrs W. & G. Newland. Settlers will no doubt lake advantage of the easy terms offered. The Waverley Rifles held their monthly parade on Saturday, the 19th instant. The difficulty on the Coast being now considered almost disposed of, the probability is that the corps will shortly be disbanded, as so few turn out on parade. This would be a pity, as the events of the last few weeks have shown the value of the volunteers in cases of emergency. There is no doubt that without the assistance of the volunteers, the Defence Minister would not have been able to cope with the difficulty.
