WAVERLEY.
BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Friday Evening. A meeting of the Waverley School Committee was held on Thursday, 21st instant. Present : Messrs Dickie, Mason, Caldwell, McDonald, and Bridge, Minutes of previous meetings read and confirmed. Resolved that Mr Davis’s account bo referred to Mr Thurston, and if correct that it be paid. Resolved that a double row of trees be planted on the south side of the school paddock, and a few at intervals along the road, and tdat the carrying out of this resolution be left to Mr Caldwell. Resolved that Mr Scott be authorised to have gardens laid out for the girls in their play-ground, and that the committee give a prize at Christmas for the best kept garden. Resolved that a ploughing-bee be held in the school paddock (town belt) on September 6th. Account passed for payment : G. Taylor, 12s. - The Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society held their fortnightly meeting on Thursday evening. Mr Mackie opened the debate “ That in breaking in horses it is unnecessary to use a whip,” Mr James Walker taking the affirmative. Messrs Burrow, Taylor, Scott, and Bridge spoke in favor of using the whip, and the vote being taken the argument in favor of using the whip was carried:
