HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manutahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. I hear that the New Plymouthites have had a meeting for the purpose of getting up some demonstration upon ; the day of the opening of the railway to Hawera. I think it about time that the people of Hawera did something in this line. There is to be a meeting on Wednesday next for the purpose of urging upon the Government the necessity of establishing a District Court here ; also that standard plans should be deposited at the local Land Office, and other important matters. I regret having to record the death of Mr Anderson, late assistant in the Telegraph Office. He had not been very well of late, being laid up with fever, but on Friday last he thought himself well enough to get about again. Unfortunately a relapse came on, and he died on Monday evening. He was a general favorite, and his death caused quite a gloom to be cast over Hawera. Te Whiti still preaches peace and obstruction* He 'counsels his followers not to be rash, but to go on quietly obstructing. I believe there were a great many at the meeting, but not many Europeans. I have heard nothing further 'about the fencing being gone on with. Sections in Hawera are going off at a good rate at present. Last week several were quitted at from £3OO to £350, and yesterday a fancy section was sold at about £2O per foot. There is also a good enquiry for rural lands, although purchasers are not inclined to give the prices asked by vendors.

The fire occurred early in the evening, and being noticed in time, was soon put out without any great amount of damage being done.
