EARTHQUAKES AND SCIENCE.

The recent terrible earthquake on the Island of Ischia, opposite the Bey of Naples, by which a hundred persons were killed and twice as many wounded has generally been attributed to volcanic disturbances, connected with Mount Vesnvious ; but Professor L. Palmieri, who is high authority on such subjects, finds no evidence in his seismographic (earthquake-writing) instruments that such was the fact. Ho is rather disposed to attribute the shocks at Ischia to the subterranean dislocation and sudden sinking of u large mass of earth occasioned by the corrosive action of the mineral springs on the island. ■ -o
