FEVER PROM THE MILKMAN.

A telegram says two cases of typhoid fever have occurred recently in Christchurch, on premises well-drained and very clean. Two or three days ago a serious outbreak of typhoid fever occurred at the Asylum, one attendant dying immediately. The same milkman supplied both families and the Asylum. On examining the milkman’s premises they were found in a filthy condition, leaving no donbt that the milk had spread the infection. There are several cases of typhoid about town, and at the Asylum. It is really alarming. The supply of milk from this dairy has boon stopped, and rigorous measures taken by the use disinfectants, &c. The local health officer has for some time been urging the Board to obtain sanitary control over dairies, but a great outcry has been raised, and nothing hitherto done. NEW SOUTH WALES AND VICTORIA. A contemporary referring to the relative progress of the two colonies says— It seems surprising how New South Wales is not ashamed to bring herself in comparison with young vigorous Victoria. New South Wales is three times her age, has five times her territory, yet the young colony beats her iu population by 120,000, and has 1,000,000 acres of land more than New South Wales under cultivation. What would the young colony do if she had New South Wales’ coal, and could realise £3,000,000 sterling a year by the sale of land ? It is little use asking such a question, as we know already that the young colony, by the aid of protection is, in the estimation of the whole world, the great colony of the southern seas, and it is known and talked of in countries where the name of New South Wales is unknown.
