In view of possible hostilities with the Ashantees Her Vajesty’s corvette Champion, II guns, has been ordered to the Gold Coast, where she will organise a naval brigade for service in Ashantec. TORPEDO DEFENCE AT SYDNEY. Sydney 9th. The Government has announced that the sum of .£OOOO will be spent in completing the torpedo defence of Sydney harbor. DISCLOSURES BY GENERAL ROBERTS. London 10th. According to official documents which have been published, General Sir Frederick Roberts discovered, while in occupation at Cabul, a secret treaty for an offensive and defensive alliance signed between Russia and the Ameer, dated August, 1878. Also a letter from the Russian General Slolieloff (sic), dated October of the same year, advising Shore Ali to sue for peace with England, but at the same time to secretly prepare for war. Other papers which were found moreover show that the Russian policy included measures to incite an armed rebellion of Mahommedans in India. RAILWAYS AND LOANS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney 10th. Mr Watson announced that the railways of the colony are paying about 4-| per cent on the capital sum on the construction. He disclaimed any intention on the part of the Government to raise

a new loan on the London market at present, but stated that a loan for £600,000 might possibly be issued in the colony at an early date.

HURRYING THE IRISH LAND BILL.

London Bth. It is now announced that it is the intention of the Government that the Irish Land should if possible become law before Easter, and every effort will be made to bring about this result. NEW SOUTH WALES REVENUE. Sydney 10th. The Hon John Watson, Colonial Treasurer, introduced his Financial Statement in the Legislative Assembly last night. He estimates the revenue for this year at £5,440,000, and expenditure at £5,232,000. No material changes are proposed in the estimates of expenditure except reduction of onethird in the immigration vote.
