RAPID SHOE-MAKING.

In some of the groat boot and shoe factories of Massachusetts hydraulic slice presses are employed, by tbc aid of which one operator can solo 700 pairs of shoes per day ; power-machines for trimming and planing the edges of solos of boots, each doing the work of throe men and doing it better ; sewing-wclt machines, making shoos as pliable and comfortable as when hand-sewed, and turning out 120 pairs a day per machine; wax and dry thread sewing machines. In leatherdressing machinery there were glossing, stoning, pebbling and polishing jacks, turning and strapping mills; hide unhairing machines equal to the work of four or eight men, taking out the lime and doing away with the cumbersome process of bating and drenching; leathermeasuring machines of rapid and accurate action ; and leather-softening machines, by which every fibre is loosened and softened without injury, and the leather rendered strong, soft, and flexible.
