SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.

It will be remembered that Mr Creighton, who is agent at San Francisco for the New Zealand Government, has for some years past been earnestly pressing on the attention of the United States Government the advisabloness of remitting the charges hitherto made for the conveyance of the Australian and New Zealand mails across the continent. This means, in fact, a concession amouning to £16,000 a year in favor of the service. Mr Creighton has based his representations mainly on the necessity of some such aid to the service in order to avoid its terminating on the expiration of the existing contract by effluxion of time three years hence, and he has also made a strong point of the notorious partiality entertained by the Imperial postal authorities in favor of the Suez route. We are very glad to learn that efforts have at length been rewarded with success, a measure having been passed through the United States Congress empowering the PostmastcrGencral to remit, as desired, the charges for the conveyance of the mails across the American continent. The present San Francisco mail service has proved such a complete and remarkable success, and costs this colony in reality so trifling a sum in net outlay, that it is very satisfactory to learn of its receiving this valuable assistance from the country which is so large a gainer by its existence and continuance. Mr Creighton deserves the hearty thanks of the New Zealand colonist? for his persevering and successful exertions in this matter. Post.
