WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 80 subscribers between Whenuahura and Waitotaru. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL. Friday Evening. Cricket. —A match is to be played at Patea on Saturday between picked teams of the Patea and Waverley Clubs. I find it difficult to get a correct list of the Waverley players. Some of our best players live at considerable distance from the t«wnahip. The Late Fire. —Oliver Robinson, the man who set fire to his dwelling on Tuesday evening, was taken to Paloa on Wednesday morning and tried, but got off with u lino of one axsd costs, because bis bouse was not insured, and the burning of it did not endanger anyone elsc’s property. A man must bo allowed to burn bis own property', if lie can find no other use for it. Such is the law. Inspection Parade. —The Cavalry inspection parade which was to have taken place next Saturday has been postponed till further orders. The winning numbers in Mr Mason’s sweep on the Waverlcy-Waitotara handicap are advertised to-day. 1.0.GT. —The Waverley Good Templars met on Thursday night and installed officers, and initiated two ladies and two male members. Brother E. G. Allswortb, of Wanganui, District Deputy, was present, and expressed himself pleased at the way the Lodge was conducted. William Holtz, who met with the serious accident reported in your last issue, was a member, and (bough not a benefit society, help was rendered by Good Templars who were at baud. A member of the Lodge bad to guarantee payment before medical aid could bo procured from Patea, the Wanganui doctor who was on the ground not being inclined to stay, and it was eight hours after the accident before the sufferer received medical attention. A rich man would have been attended to quickly. Holtz was but a laborer. A resident surgeon would be advantageous, but accidents are rare, and Waverley is too healthy a place to yield much revenue to any doctor in general practice. The report that Holtz was drunk is a slander.
