HAWERA.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manuiahl and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Friday Evening. I hear on good authority that it is the intention of the Government to put the whole of the land as far as Wahamoku, a little this side of Oeo, in the market forthwith. Mr Parris started at three o’clock yesterday morning in order to consult with Sir Dillon Bell and Sir Wibiam Fox on the whole question of the West Coast settlement. When those blocks are sold very little good open land will be left for the Government to sell, the remainder being Maori reserves, so that I anticipate keener competition and higher prices at the next sale. At a meeting of the Committee of the Hawera Institute last night a long discussion took place as to ways and means. Several members were in favour of calling a meeting of the public and lay before them the advisability of closing the reading room, but it was ultimately decided to make a canvass for subscriptions next week, and if the public contributed liberally to still continue as heretofore.
