RECEIVED LAST NIGHT. ( Renter's Despatches to the Mai.) MR GLADSTONE ON IRELAND. THE NEW LORD MAYOR. London, 10th, At a banquet at Guildhall last evening, Mr McArthur, M.P., the new Lord Mayor, in the course of a speech referred to the Prince of Wales’s inability to visit Australia, and said if his Royal Highness had made the journey he would have been astonished at the progress of the colonies. The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, in replying to the toast of her Majesty’s Ministers, dwelt on the anxieties of the Government, which he said were chiefly in regard to Ireland. The Government would deal with the grievances of the Irish people, but it was their first duty to maintain order, and additional powers for this purpose would possibly be asked of Parliament. Referring to foreign affairs, Mr Gladstone in the course of his remarks said that European concert which existed had proved useful in maintaining peace, and bringing about partial settlement of difficulties which had existed.
GREEK WAR PREPARATIONS. Athens, 11th. In view of the expressed intention of Government to maintain their demand for rectification of the Greek frontier, additional troops arc being mobilised, and the army throughout placed on a war looting, NEW ZEALANDERS. Melbourne, Friday. Seventy ladies and gentlemen, New Zealand colonists, held a ban quest last night. Judge Gillies occupied the chair, Messrs Peacock and Reid being vicechairmen. Numerous toasts were proposed, and a most enjoyable evening spent.
