KAKARAMEA.
(f no m ou u coni;i;si l ok dk nt A Wednesday Evening. Ilaii.wav. —The works at Manutahi are proceeding favorably. Three cuttings varying - from 25ft to 30ft in height are being made under the supervision of Mr Woolcock. A new system of shoots, by which the soil is carried directly' to the dray's without the aid of shovels, has been introduced successfully, so that a considerable increase m the rale of progress may consequently he anticipated. One of thc largest lillings-in on the Kakaramca contract over No. 1 culvert has been commenced by Air Powell. It will require something like 216,000 yards to complete it. No. 3 culvert at Messrs Ilearnc and Kennedy’s by Mr Pell is nearly' finished. Messrs Mace and Bassett, Patea, arc the successful tenderers for the culvert near Mr Burke’s sheep-clip. Mr Daniells is now employing 20 drays.
One of the canteeucrs on the lino has been treated to what, is generally termed a “Yankee start.” About nine or leu of the unemployed at Chapman’s camp, after running up a tidy’ score for liquor and small luxuries, such as sardines, salmon, lobsters, &c., quietly took to their heels and vanished from the festive scene. This is too smart for men whose average wages amount to three shillings per day'. I should think it will be a warning to other proprietors.
