TO THE EDITOR.
[Correspondents arc invited to discuss matters o£ public interest with fairness and brevity : this journal being an impartial medium of discussion and advocacy for all (fairs relating to the County of Patea.] A PARTING COMPLIMENT. Sj i!, —I leave here to-morrow for Greyrnouth, from whence [ shall take a cargo of coals for Waitara. Before going, however, I should like, through the medium of your paper, to express my regret that sufficient inducement does not offer for me to trade here regularly. I have been off here twice during the last six weeks, and found no obstacle whatever to my getting inside the harbor. On the last two occasions of my crossing the bar, I sailed in and out without danger. I found 12 feet of water on the bar at neap tides. In fact I piofor Patea bar to any other oi (ho small bars on the West Coast; and I believe if a dredge were employed in the river, the bar could be deepened to 20 foot, and vessels of 200 tons could trade here in safety.—Yours, &c., J. BItADLFV, Master of Schooner Amaranth. Patea. 27th.
