[from OUR CO I! K E S ROND E X T, J BItANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Hawera, Monday. Cricket. —The match, Nonnanby, Waihi, and Ngaire v. Hawera and Mokoia, came off on Saturday last, and the weather'was all that could be desired by cricketers. •Mr Beresford captained the first-named team and Mr Hiddiford the latter. The Haworas were put in first, and managed to make 163 before the last wicket fell ; G. Bayly contributing 49, Farrington 25, Riddiford 16, and extras 48. The first innings of the Nonnanby side closed for 70, Beresford and Miller playing good cricket for 25 and 18 respectively. In their second innings eight wickets had fallen for 79 runs when time was called, the match being drawn much in favor of the Hawera and Mokoia team. In the second innings Johnston made 18, Beresford 13, and Southey, not out, 13. The Acclimatisation Society held a meeting at Lloyd’s Hotel on Friday afternoon ; Mr F. Livingston, president, in the chair. There was a fair attendance ofmembers. The balance-sheet read by the treasurer, Mr Barleyman, for the year ending April 30, showed that the receipts were £IOO 11s, and the expenditure £7B Is 11s ; outstanding accounts, £37 Is 4d ; and the balance available for futiue expenditure, £l4 4s 3d. The balance-sheet was adopted. .Resolved, “That for the future no licenses bo issued until the money has been received for same, and that agents be supplied with receiptbooks.” Resolved, “That 3000 trout be procured from Mr A. W. Johnson, Christchurch.” The fish Avill probably be distributed as follows Manga stream, Kohi stream, Whenuaknra river, Hinaha, Kapuni, and Kaupokanui. Mr F. R. Jackson’s monthly stock sale on Friday was well attended by Hawera settlers. 566 head of cattle were yarded, and the bidding was spirited. Prices were at late rates, 3-ycar-okl store bullocks, £6 to £6 10s ; 2-year-old steers, £4 10s ; cows, £3 12s 6d to £4 ; cows and calves, £4 15s ; fat cows, £5 17s Gd to £G 15s ; yearlings £2 10s to £2 15s.
HAWEEA ROAD BOARD. A special meeting of the Board was held on Saturday, the 16th instant. Present: Messrs Hunter (in the chair), Crane, Robson, and Morrison. The following report was received from the foreman of works : According to instructions of the Board I have been over the Ngaire roads, and find the following works required to allow settlers to get to their land, — Finnerty Road —Bridge across the Mangawhero, about 10 chains of side cutting which will be on a deviation to avoid gully and heavy cuttings. Conway Road, —Bridge across the Mangawhero, and approaches which will not be heavy, road between sections 44 and 47, block 10, frame culverts and cuttings. Road between sections 2 and 3, block 14, one frame culvert with heavy cutting, and putting one box culvert with light filling between section 9 and 10, block 13, one box culvert and filling Dahicl Road , —Between sections 12 and 15, block 13, frame culvert and filling, not heavy; between sections 15 and 19, box culvert and light filling; between sections 22 and 24, box culvert and filling, not heavy ; and between sections 22 and 28, block 13, box culvert with filling, not heavy. Road between sections 30 and 34, block 13, frame culvert with heavy cutting and fillings. Boylan Road, —Six gullies will require culverts, two box and four frame from 30 to 50 feet in length, filling and cutting from 400 to 1000 3 r ards in each; at Te Roti end of Boylan -road there will be about 00 chains of side cutting, mostly light. The road along the railway between the Boylan and Austin roads will require a track clearing of logs and stumps. John Twice.. Resolved, That the report as read be adopted. , The Chairman stated that he had written to the Crown Lands Commissioner with reference to the Ngaire deferred payment moneys, but had received no reply. Mr Robson proposed that the engineer be instructed to make out plans and specifications and lay off the work on Finnerty, Dalziel, Boylan, and Stewart roads, and clearing a track about 20 feet wide between the Boylan and Austin roads; and that the Engineer make a comparative estimate of the cost of deviating or going on with road line as laid oil; on Finnerty road ; and that tenders be called for works on Austin and Boylan roads by next meeting. Seconded by Mr Gane, and carried. Resolved that the Chairman communicate with the Public Works Department to ascertain whether the road from Boylan road to Austin road is a gazetted public road ; and to urge upon the Minister that proper approaches to crossings be made where cuttings have been done for the railway works. The following tenders were received for work on Katone road :—H. Golding, 7s per chain (accepted) ; Aikman and Commorie, 7s per chain ; E. McDonald, 10s per chain ; H. and A. Clement, 12s per chain. The Board adjourned.
