WAITOTARA.
[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT,]
Wednesday Evening,
Since the removal of our school building to the new site, I have heard considerable complaints about the unpleasant road leading to it. From the main road some 150 yards between Mr Nicholl’s fence and the river is always muddy, and a shower of rain is at anytime sufficient to make it a disagresable walk for children and teacher. Another matter I notice is that nothing has been done towards fencing in the ground around the building. This it appears to me would have been done more cheaply if it had been included in the contract for removing.
Speaking of that, the contractor who carried out the work of removal so successfully, made only average wages at the job even with the £6 lOs .over the originally accepted tender. Part of the way it was taken was through little better than swamp, and even on the hard ground planks had to be used under the wheels all the way. The contractor deserves every credit for the manner in which he executed the work.
