The Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society will meet to-morrow, Thursday, to discuss “ Monarchy versus Republicanism.” Mr Barclay will open the debate, takingthe Republican side, Mr G. J.Mackie taking the other. This society should bo a great attraction to the young men of the district, as it affords pleasant and profitable entertainment, and gives the mind something to dwell upon for a length of time-
Rifle Match* — A rifle competition takes place next Saturday between 10 privates and 10 officers and non-commis-sioned officers of the Waverley Rifles. Waverley seems far behind this season ns far as practice matches go, this being the first.
Horses, —A mob of horses, the property of Messrs Morton and Lupton, passed through the township this morning in charge of Mr Morton, en route for Waitara whence they will be shipped to Auckland, When we consider the distance these horses have to travel before they can be shipped, we naturally ask “ Is there no port nearer than Waitara”? What is Patea dreaming about? When her inhabitants awake to the facts, thej r will see to their interests and make an effort) which if properly sustained will be the means of bringing the Waverley stock to that port for shipment which would other* wise have to pass through the ports of Wanganui or Waitara.
WAIRORA HIGHWAY BOARD. The monthly meeting was held on Saturday. Present, Messrs lon, Aiken, Johnston, and the Chairman. The Treasurer's balance showed £46 13s 2d ; block VIII., £4l 12s 6d ; block IX., £2ll 6s Bcl. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr lon, “ That the consideration of Hind’s road to block VIII. stand over till next meeting.” Carried.
Proposed hy the Chairman, seconded by Mr lon, “ That tenders be invited by next meeting for repairing main bridge cutting.” Carried. Proposed by Mr lon, and seconded by Mr Johnston, “ That Mr Wilson’s letter, requesting the Board to sand the Oika cutting, lie on the table.” Carried. Proposed by Mr Johnson, seconded by Mr Aiken, “ That the Chairman apply to the Railway Department to make the road between Atkin’s and Peat’s passable for cart traffic.” Carried.
Proposed by Mr lon, seconded b} 7 Mr Johnston, “That the following accounts be passed for payment:—Hone 14s> Harris 16s, Hughes and Thurston £37 2s, Payton 355, A. Milne £8 9s 9d, Ross 21s, McLean 21s, Fookes £l6 19s 9d, Hollin £2 10s, J. Thurston £lB 6s Bd, Fraser and Muldrock £43 13s 9d.
Wool can now be shipped at Auckland to San Francisco per mail steamer at a farthing per pound, or Auckland to New York at a penny. Wanganui “stongly advisee the New Plymouth people to remain as quiet as possible. They occupy a position which will hardly bear scrutiny, and the less they oppose themselves to Wanganui, the better it will be for them in the long run. ” Wanganui does not appreciate the meddling solicitude of our Maiden Aunt.
The Victories of the Australian cricketers in England were 21 out of 27 matches--12 other matches being drawn and mostly in their favor, and only four lost. They were beaten by eleven of All England and Nottinghamshire, aud they were also beaten by 18’s of Scarborough and Stockport. The previous team from Australia (’7B) played 41 matches, won 20, lost 7, and 14 drawn.
