Cricket.—The long looked for opening match of the season came off on Saturday. A gi eat many, spectators, including a fair sprinkling of the fair sex, witnessed the game. Play commenced at about halfpast ten'. The captain of the eleven won the toss, and elected to put the 22 in. They were not disposed of until about 2.30, and had put together the neat total of 144; Miller, Goodson, Ardern, Gorton, and Innes contributing double figures. The 22 look the field, and had some difficulty in getting the first wicket, which fell at 30. The innings of the eleven .finished for 120; Messrs Beresford, Farrington, Johnston, Riddiford, and Cunningham getting double figures. The 22 thus won by 24 runs, Mr Riddiford captained the 11, and Mr Bate the 22. Some good cricket was shown on both sides, and a strong eleven could be picked out of the 33. It is reported that a detachment of the Constabulary will be stationed near Manaia during the week, and that there will be built a strong redoubt there. Another detachment of the Public Works contingent will also bo stationed on the Plains.
