WAVERLEY.
[from our correspondent.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. The Wairoa Light Horse parade will commence on the 14th October, instead of the 11th. TELEGRAMS.-Thepetitiongot up through the action of Mr Fookes, and forwarded to the manager of the Telegraphic Department, has met with a favourable reception, and after the Ist October telegrams to and from Waverley are to- be ai the ordinary shilling rate. The advisability of such reduction was probably seen in the fact of so few telegrams having been sent lately. Coaches.— Now that the Railway has been opened to Waitotara, Waverley seems within more reasonable distance of Wanganui, as no early start in the morning need to be made. It is a great loss to Patea as a port and place of business that the railway is not being pushed on to join it with Waverley. Being in the same county their interests are identical, and Wanganui as a port can never compete with Wellington. The home trade must be conducted by one or two principal ports in each Island, as one vessel direct from Home every season, or two or three of them during the year, can afford the storekeeper a scant}’ selection from which to choose his stock, compared with such centres as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. A coasting and intercolonial trade must be the chief source from which interest for present outlay can be derived ; and while thinking how posterity may applaud our self-sacrificing endeavours on their behalf, it may be a wise arrangement that we do not wait here long enough to learn how our efforts are appreciated. Town Hale. — The Committee have taken over the decorations from the artist’s hands, having expressed themselves highly satisfied with the work. The new seats arc also finished and placed, so that our hall can compare favourably in appearance and fittings with any hall on the Coast.
