HAWERA.

[v n o3i o uit co it u k srox dn n t , J BEAJS'CIL OFFICE OF THE MAIL. Friday Evening. During the week many persons have visited the far-famed Waimate Plains, but few have come back that do not express themselves disappointed. The land has no doubt been greatly over-rated, and is not nearty so good now as i t was some five or six years ago in consequence of the pig-rootings. Settlers will be obliged to fence with posts and wire, as the surface has been so much spoilt b}’ these animals as to destro}’ the sods for ditch and bank fence. Cobb and Co.’s coaches are to run daily to Ngairc from the Ist of next month, affording increased facilities to travellers. The road by next month should be in good order, Maoris seem rather “ Hush ” of money these last few days, and have availed themselves of its possession by visitingtown and doing a spree, which has had the effect of making Hawera a little more lively. I hear from Parihaka that the fencingoperations still go on ; but no further arrests are made. The Maoris, mostly youths, desist at the approach of the A.C.’s, and run away. JIAWERA li.M. COURT. Tkoikdav, before Mr C. A. Wray. Henry Bastoe was summoned from Auckland for £l6 7s, 6d,, maintenance of his children. It would seem that he was one of the unemployed on the Plains, and whilst in the discharge of his duties he met with an accident, since which he has been in the Patea Hospital. He now offered to pa}’ 10s per week, as he had succeeded in getting employment last week. The case was adjourned for a month in order to give defendant an opportunity. Mr and Mrs Vine, of Normanby, have of late taken up a good deal of the time of the Court with reference to their family squabbles. On Thursday Mrs Vine summoned her husband for assault by pushing her out of the house, compelling her to seek protection with friends. As is usual in these cases, there was a great deal of conflicting evidence. The source of these quarrels seem to be the refusal of the wife to allow the husband connubial rights. After a patient hearing by the bench, the case was dismissed. Mr Barley man appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Farrington for the defendant.

Hone Pihama sued T. Quinlivan for £l7 3s. for hire of two drays and horses, and also board. This case occupied the court some time, and ultimately the amount was reduced to the hire of one dray. Several minor debt cases were disposed of.
