(FROM our correspondent.') Friday Evening. A meeting of the Town Hall Committee Avushcldon Wednesday 7 , Present, Messrs Brodie, Brown, Hunter, Mcßae, and Wilson. Resolved, that an entertainment, sisting of concert and dance, be held in aid of the building fund. Messrs Baggett, Hunter, and Mcßae Avere appointed a subcommittee to make arrangements, and the entertainment is to be held about the middle of October. Accident.—A man named Scott, cm. ployed by Mr Foreman of Manutahi, met with au accident on Thursday 7 morning. He Avas driving a light cart laden Avith butter firkins, and Avhen coming cloavii the hill near Mr Mcßae’s boiling-down establishment the back band of the harness broke, precipitating 1 him to the ground. The cart-wheel Avent over his foot. The frightened horse bolted with the trap, the shafts ploughing up lire earth until both broke off. Luckily 7, Scott Avas soon picked up and carried to the Wharncliffe Hotel, where every 7 attention was shown him, and it is to be hoped a I‘cav days’ rest will enable him to return to his duties. Splinters off one shaft entered the animal’s leg, and it suffers severely 7. Mr W. Cowern held his usual sale at the new yards on Wednesday 7. The attendance was unusually large, owing- doubtless to the number of stock advertised. The cold southerly Avind and clouds of dust soon caused buyers and settlers to take refuge Avithin the walls of the old Wharncliffe Hotel, much to the satisfaction of the worthy 7 host, Mr O’Sullivan, though militating against the success of the sale. Neither auctioneer nor bidders could hear each other speak. Only a few pens were sold under the hammer, most being 1 placed privately 7 afterwards. 243 head of cattle Avere y 7 ardctl, 100 sheep, and a few pigs and horses. Sellers seemed disinclined to part, excepting at extreme rates. Wcaners and up to 15 months, for which the best demand existed, realised from £2 15s to £3 Bs. One good pen of bullocks sold at £5 lUs, and another large pen passed in at £6 ss. 100 wethers (light weights) fetched 10s.
